Smoking and drinking became more costly this week. As discussed ad nauseum, the state’s budget crisis was temporarily solved two weeks ago when “sin taxes” were increased on tobacco and liquor. As well, a penny was added to the state’s sales tax, making it one of the more costly in the nation. All of this went into effect this week, causing massive outbreaks of cash register anxiety disorder.
College will cost more too
Tuition increases of 7.5 percent for many of the state’s public colleges and universities were approved this week. Again, it’s largely because we just don’t have a whole lot of money to go around, so hitting the students up for just a portion of their beer money certainly made sense.
The horses are nearing the finish line
Courtesy of The Tennessean, and with only two weeks before election day, the newspaper’s polling shows: Jim Cooper leading Gayle Ray in the 5th Congressional District; Fran Marcum and Lincoln Davis just about tied in the 4th District; and Marsha Blackburn ahead in the 7th. The polls are open for early voting if you want to go ahead and get it over with.
This reenactment is going a little too far
Seems as if we may soon have a new institute of higher learning in our midst. To be named the Southern Military Institute, and located on 416 acres outside Shelbyville, the military college would be all-male and have strong Confederate ties. As they say, the enemy is us.
