A terrible honor

A terrible honor

Smart guys finish last. Five months ago, the American Football Coaches Association honored two universities—Vanderbilt and Notre Dame—for having perfect graduation rates among their football teams. Now the two programs are linked again. Only a month after Woody Widenhofer resigned as Vanderbilt coach toward the end of a 2-9 season, Notre Dame fired its coach Bob Davie after going 5-6.

Preemptive strike

The battle between Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe, who wants lawmakers to raid the state road fund to help solve budget problems, and Gov. Don Sundquist, who’s against raiding the road fund, is heating up. But perhaps there’s a method to the madness. The next obvious target for state lawmakers looking for the latest irresponsible way of balancing the budget would be to abruptly cut off revenues shared between the state and local governments. That would leave local officials holding the bag—and Ashe probably wants to strike first by raiding the road fund.

Close to home

Three of the five U.S. Army Special Operations soldiers injured in Afghanistan last week during a prisoner revolt are from Fort Campbell, The Tennessean reported. Their names were scheduled to be released this week.
