Get Back

In an interview for Artquotes.net, Lyle Carbajal observed, “I am always trying to get back to where it all came from. If one looks closely at my pictures and understands paint, they will find how passionate I am about letting paint simply be paint … You can be the greatest of trained artist[s], but if at any time you find yourself afraid of screwing something up, it will come across. Never be afraid of completely destroying what you love.” This daring approach is clear in his wildly energetic, art brut-inspired pieces. His works often suggest violence; although semi-abstract, they feature figures whose crudely drawn faces display sinister grins and angry leers that are as simple and clear as a comic-book character’s. His work has been exhibited around the world, and he’s also the subject of the upcoming book Urban+Primitive: The Art of Lyle Carbajal.
