New on DVD: Coraline, Watchmen and More

Two of the year's most striking mainstream releases arrive today in stores, an eerie stop-motion fantasy for mature kids and a grim demolition of the superhero mythos that's decidedly not for children. Adapted from Neil Gaiman's novella, Henry Selick's exquisite Coraline uses 3-D with unusual beauty and subtlety, utilizing the process to heighten the little heroine's perilous venture into a creepy otherworld where non-stop gratification isn't all it's cracked up to be. The 2-disc set includes both 3-D and 2-D versions. Coming out the same day is director Zack Snyder's cut of the Alan Moore adaptation Watchmen, which includes 25 minutes of footage not seen in the theatrical release. If nothing else, it'll offer a second look at Jackie Earle Haley's electrifying turn as the Travis Bickle-esque pitbull vigilante Rorschach. Also out this week: Criterion editions of Godard's Made in USA and the mind-blowing Two or Three Things I Know About Her; the engaging bio Anita O'Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer; and John Malkovich as The Great Buck Howard.
