Maybe no other grouping of photogenic young men more successfully bridged the late ’70s Jacksons emulation from whence it was born and the progressive R&B of the New Jack Swing era, while also helping shape and guide the latter. (Not always in the best ways; see Another Bad Creation.) The Boston-bred group that produced hits from “Popcorn Love” to “With You All the Way” also launched solo careers for Bobby Brown and his replacement, Johnny Gill, not to mention a second-act career for Ricky (Bel), Michael (Biv) and Ronnie (DeVoe). Kind of like Van Halen touring with both Diamond Dave and Sammy Hagar, the new edition of New Edition features all six members, even the two who didn’t overlap the first time through. Unlike Van Halengar, New Edition’s spinoffs have as many worthwhile hits as the marquee namesake, and that should make for a night worthy of resurrecting the Running Man. Norris Cole’s fade knows what time it is. STEVE HARUCH
