Nashville Scene Music Awards: A Guide to the Nominees

Why, in this age of too damned many awards shows, did the Nashville Scene decide to launch its own local music awards?

Why, in this age of too damned many awards shows, did the Nashville Scene decide to launch its own local music awards?

It's a fair question. From the CMA Awards to the AMA Awards to the late, but not necessarily lamented Nammies, this city has seen its share of events celebrating the wealth of music in our midst. But the Scene is aiming for something different. For all the awarding that goes on around here (and everywhere else in the entertainment business), no one's really taking the opportunity to recognize the music that gets made every week in the basements, clubs and warehouses of our city.

Nashville's always had a deep, rich musical culture, but with each passing year, the local scene gets more dynamic, and this is our chance to honor that. It wasn't too hard to assemble a list of nominees for each of the 10 fairly diverse categories listed below. In plenty of cases, our committee had to argue about how to whittle the list down. Some of the musicians nominated for our Music Awards have yet to set foot outside of Middle Tennessee, some have been dragging their gear across the country in a beat-up van, and others have made their way to Europe and even Japan. But they all call Nashville home, and they've all chosen to make music on their own terms. That's something worth celebrating and honoring, especially considering the quality of the music that comes crackling out of this city's speakers on a daily and nightly basis.

Oh, one other thing that's different about our awards: in keeping with the idea that you should never subject someone to something you wouldn't do yourself, we're not going to have some, long, drawn-out (and frankly boring) awards ceremony. Nope, we're throwing a party, and all the musicians, their friends and their fans are invited. The date is Tuesday, Sept. 21, at The Mercy Lounge, and some of the nominees will be performing; the show is free and open to the public. We'll announce the winners in the Sept. 23 issue of the Nashville Scene. Stay tuned.

Special thanks to Natalie Kilgore for compiling the band information for our nominee guide and Web site.
