Nashville Fringe Night at The Basement

Fringe Benefits

Fringe Benefits
The Basement’s occasional fringe series is dedicated to exploring lesser-known genres of rock music (avant chamber, tribal percussion). So it isn’t surprising that James Jackson Toth would get involved; the Wooden Wand mastermind has experimented in the past with “surf harmonica” and “doom zydeco,” and he describes his newest project as “Stonehenge fuckface gumbo.” Occult Activity on Campus will also feature The Cherry Blossoms’ Chris Davis. They’ll be joined by three more free-jammin’ local bands: minimalist improvisers Dead Snake, local weirdo-rock supergroup Sic Semper Tyrannis (featuring members of 84001 and Ancient Ocean), and Dave Cloud’s avant-garde covers project Cavalcade. (Lylas, who play a decidedly un-avant garde brand of folk rock, will also perform.) Most of these bands are so new, they don’t have a record or even a MySpace page—so take this opportunity to hear them first.

as member of one of the bands playing and attendee of previous 'fringe' shows, its cool that somebody is paying attention to the monkeys swinging from the roof. although the darkest hours have yet to come, the light of a new morning will bring forth brilliant reason and majestic truth. ride the mystic dolphin. see ya monday.
