When Taco Party owner, musician and Foobar karaoke emcee Lauren Gilbert needed an annual lady-parts checkup, lack of insurance posed a troubling problem. Luckily, there was Planned Parenthood, where Gilbert walked away with peace of mind and a bag of condomsall for free. It got her thinking about giving back, and when a friend mentioned some vegan cupcakes shed been perfecting, it was a Eureka! moment with a frosted cherry on top. To extend the cooking metaphor: Take a dozen saucy radical-feminist types of various interlocking ideologies, toss in some old-fashioned cooking acumen, then have the participants bake up their own recipes for vegan cupcakes wearing next to nothing in what any proper feminist knows is loaded terrainher own kitchen. Bring to a boil with new issues of lady zine Nashville Femme and entertainment from the calendars models (among them local singer Erin Manning) plus Gilbert and friends debuting their latest musical endeavor, dance-synth-rock garage-pop outfit Illnana. And thats to say nothing of the actual cupcakes that will be circulating: corncake with avocado and lime icing, ginger apple-sauce and chocolate chili (using local Olive and Sinclair chocolates). The desserts are free, but a peek at the dishes who made them will cost you $15and rumor has it the calendar features a nearly naked Miss April alongside a recipe for cottontail cupcakes.
