Nashville Amp Expo

When: Aug. 21-22, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. 2010

If you play guitar or bass and are ready to drop some serious bucks on a fancy new amp, it’s a major drag to test-drive it in a crowded store or a teeny NAMM booth. Never mind “11” — turn a 100-watt Marshall up past 1 and you’ll get more evil eyes than Ted Nugent at a PETA rally. Which is why the Nashville Amp Expo is a thing of such high-decibel, paint-peeling beauty. A sonic smorgasbord of amplifiers sprinkled with a smattering of guitars, pedals and accessories, the expo takes over an entire hotel, and each manufacturer gets its own room. Want to try the latest auditory confection from Goodsell, Egnator or Fuchs? Just shut the door, plug in your ax, turn it up to 11 and start wailing til your tympanic membranes cry “Uncle!” The list of over 85 exhibitors also includes boutique mainstays like Wizard, Electroplex, Reinhardt and Sommatone and hometown heroes Delgado Guitars and Paul C Audio (maker of the “Tim” pedal), not to mention Creation Audio Labs, which organizes the expo. If you can tell a Telefunken ECF83 from an Amperex Bugle Boy, or have a Fender 5E3 schematic tattooed on your forearm, you don’t want to miss it.
