Blackbird Theater will head into the new year with a highly anticipated production of Stephen Sondheim’s challenging Pacific Overtures. Perhaps that will prep the company for the eventual production of this original musical by Blackbird co-founders Wes Driver and Greg Greene and composer Michael Slayton. Tonight marks its first public reading, with more than 25 actors presenting the entire script and performing the composed songs (thus far representing about half of the full score). No mere “little musical,” Myth tells the story of how and why the gods were cast from Mount Olympus, moving from outrageous comedy to harrowing tragedy in an epic tale of corrupt kings, unlikely heroes and the incomparable gods in all of their majestic decadence. Myth is Driver and Greene’s first musical. Slayton, an associate professor at Vanderbilt University, has been commissioned both in the U.S. and internationally, and his original works have been performed in Germany, Belgium, Norway, Portugal, France and England. Some strong talent will do the acting and singing: Jamie Farmer, Ross Bolen, Evelyn Brush, Ben Van Diepen, Wesley Paine, Mike Baum, Patrick Kramer and many others. Seating is limited, so email email@example.com for reservations.
