Musicians' Swap Meet at Billups Art

Come Sale Away

Come Sale Away
Half instrument flea market, half laid-back musician hang, this monthly gathering has been gaining steam, and typically provides a few of those “only in Nashville” moments that’ll have you talking for days. Take last month’s swap meet, where Bob Dylan sideman (and erstwhile BR549er) Donnie Herron spent hours sampling all of the fiddles from Uncle George’s Violin Orphanage, tended by Nashville underground legend (and musical pack rat) George Bradfute, who’s produced and/or recorded with Paul Burch, Webb Wilder, Jill Sobule and Jason Ringenberg to name a few. Sure, checking out the instruments is a blast for players—vendors have included everyone from Rock Block Guitars, Murfreesboro’s String Shop, Knoxville’s Music Room Guitars and Memphis Vintage Guitars down to local collectors and hobbyists—but moments like these make for a great Saturday afternoon for anyone. And a cheap one, too—the September edition is a special open house, so admission is free.
