Raul Malo’s exquisite singing and Miss Tess’s “modern vintage” sounds aside, it’s a walk on the ’grassy side for this week’s MCR lineup. The Grascals are riding high on the charts with a nifty Cracker Barrel-branded release that features guests ranging from modern superstar Brad Paisley to the legendary Tom T. Hall joining them on country standards. Purists may turn up their noses, but the fans are buying — and the set’s appeal is magnified by a wrenchingly true-to-life tearjerker in the original “I Am Strong.” The husband-and-wife Aldridges are as sweet as you’d expect, with well-chosen songs and a surprisingly muscular band that includes bombshell fiddler Rachel Renee Johnson and multi-talented bass man Eddie Biggerstaff. Rounding out the show is the virtuosic trio of Matt Flinner (mandolin), Ross Martin (guitar) and Eric Thorin (bass); on the edge of the ’grass world, they’ve got more than enough chops and originality to win admiration therein.
