Music City Roots hosted by Jim Lauderdale feat. Cherryholmes & more

When: Wed., June 2, 7 p.m. 2010
Price: $10-$13
It’s arguably the case that every release deserves to be weighed on its own merits, but that can be hard to do with Cherryholmes — every step of their journey, from just-learning, calico-and-denim-clad family bluegrass band to high-powered acoustic (but still banjo-driven) ensemble, can be seen on YouTube. And in terms of both presentation and music, the transformation has been remarkable enough to linger on one’s mind. Their brand-new album, Cherryholmes IV: Common Threads (Skaggs Family Records), continues the trend, with increasingly well-crafted original songs, more spectacular singing and playing, and an abundance of energy that sometimes threatens to overflow every bound. A special edition of Music City Roots devoted to celebrating the release seems wholly warranted, and with youngest member Molly on the verge of voting age, perhaps the time has come when they can put their formative days behind them for good and just be what they are: one seriously kick-ass band.
