You can’t help but root for a band like this. These guys certainly aren’t without talent, they hit the road hard, and they’ve been at it for a while. Eleven years to be exact, though the seeds of the group go back even further, since singer, songwriter and guitarist Dave Coleman and bassist Jason “Hitch” Hitchcock were childhood buddies. These days, The Coal Men perform as a trio — rounded out by drummer Dave Ray — though there have been times when they’ve expanded to a five-person lineup. Coleman is a heartfelt, human, down-to-earth songwriter and — through a couple independent releases and last year’s Kids With Songs on the indie label Funzalo — he and his bandmates have proven themselves reliable purveyors of sturdy, tuneful roots-rock.
