Offering both a fine experience in the house and a broadcast on history-heavy WSM-AM, the Music City Roots crew rolls along with another outstanding and diverse lineup. Radney Fosters whipsmart songs and Donna Ulisses winsome blend of mountain bluegrass and contemporary songwriting are probably already familiarand always welcomewhile the languorous swing of Knoxvilles Christabel & The Jons should win some new fans, but the cant-miss act on this bill is the Emmitt-Nershi Band. Fronted by Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon and Billy Nershi of String Cheese Incident, the quartets debut, New Country Blues (SCI Fidelity), proves theyve found what looks to be a very sweet spot indeed, with songs and performances both freewheeling and concise. Blazing banjo picker Andy Thorn and award-winning-guitarist-turned-bass-player Tyler Grant round out the lineup with plenty of their own musical muscle, and the results are about as fine as jamgrass can get.
