To a pig, this event must look like all six Saw movies and both Hostels condensed into one infernal maelstrom of butchery. To us barbecue fanatics, it just looks … hold it, you say there’s a pig around here? Quick, get the rub! Some 25,000 meat mavens are expected downtown for this three-day buffet of live music, good times and sizzling flesh, as 100 teams face off in Memphis Barbecue Network and Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned battle for a total of $20,000 in prize money. Friday’s performers include Mitch Ballard & The Western Swing Machine, TJ Hitt, The Jompson Brothers and headliner Jonell Mosser., while Saturday offers the Dick50 Band, Lee Roy Parnell and Delbert McClinton — music to stoke smokers and pound ales by. All the while, there’ll be diversions such as a Kids Fun Zone, a mini-brew fest and a Viking cooking demonstration (so how do you cook a Viking?). And there’ll be plenty of smoked meat on hand, from samples of the various teams to a Smokin’ Hot Arena equipped with Paradise Ridge barbecue. The event is open to the public Friday and Saturday, but teams will be manning their smokers and partying well into the wee hours Thursday. Admission is $10 for one day or $15 for two, with admission to the Smokin’ Hot Arena starting at $50. For more information, see www.musiccitybbqfestival.com.
