When I was growing up during the 1970s in Muhlenberg County, Ky., I had little knowledge and even less regard for its cultural history — despite the fact it had been immortalized in the John Prine song “Paradise.” Of course, much of that disdain could be chalked up to youthful ignorance and attitude on my part, but it was true that the area’s rich musical legacy was largely ignored by many of its natives for far too long. In the last few years, however, the birthplace of “Muhlenberg Country style” of thumb picking has been reclaimed by a new generation through recognition of native-son guitarists such as Mose Rager, Kennedy Jones, Ike Everly, Odell Martin and Merle Travis. In conjunction with the
Chet Atkins: Certified Guitar Player exhibit, award-winning Muhlenberg County-area inheritors of the thumb-picking tradition Joe Hudson, Paul Mosely, Eddie Pennington and Freddie Russell will perform the flying-fingers technique that helped change the role of the guitar in American music.
