MSTRKRFT at Limelight

Daft Punk-worshipping Canadian duo MSTRKRFT took the indie-electro scene by storm a few years back with squelching old-school synths, pounding drum machines, campy vocoders and the delightfully obnoxious robo-funk that comprised their 2006 effort The Looks. While they’ve mostly dished out more of the same on their newest, Fist of God, they’ve also tried to step it up a notch by replacing the aforementioned vocoders with guest appearances from the likes of Ghostface Killah, E-40, Freeway and John Legend, among others. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gotten much love from critics, and chances are, if you try any of these tracks outside their intended bass-thumping, leg-humping dance club setting, you might find them as empty and contrived as the bloggeratti do. Fortunately, originality and street cred don’t matter much on the dancefloor, which is where you’d be better off enjoying these jams.
