Rescheduled due to June 2’s rain-out, tonight’s installment of Movies in the Park features Spike Jonze’s 2009 adaptation of the classic Maurice Sendak children’s fable. Though darker and certainly less cloying than most cinema aimed primarily at children, Where the Wild Things Are features charming visuals and brilliantly designed animatronic suits that bring to life Sendak’s Wild Things. Sure, the plot is mostly just a drifting collection of dirt-clod fights and Max narrowly escaping being masticated by a beast that looks like a buffalo-monkey and sounds like Tony Soprano. But Karen O did the music, there will be plenty of refreshments at Centennial Park, and the whole thing’s free! This is the last screening in the series, and a big crowd is anticipated. Get there early to plot out a little piece of picnic real estate.
