Old Dog, New Tricks

Old Dog, New Tricks
Mountain Heart are trying to defy the natural laws of bluegrass. In their genre, lineups shift constantly; bands are always splitting and begetting new bands. But Mountain Heart just celebrated 10 years of music-making, not only under the same name, but with two original members—fiddler Jim VanCleve and banjo player Barry Abernathy—still intact. And with a decade under their belts, they’re in the process of majorly tweaking their sound. For proof, consider where they found their new lead singer, Josh Schilling, a couple years back: playing keyboards and singing in a jazz/funk band. Road That Never Ends, the 2007 live album they made with Schilling, suggests they’d like things to feel a little less straightforward and a little more steeped in Southern rock from now on. Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain—whose albums Van Cleve has produced—are open.
