Mountain Heart

When: Thu., Dec. 9, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $15
There are high and lonesome bluegrass voices and contemporary country-style bluegrass voices, but you can count on one hand the bluegrass groups that have featured a voice steeped in R&B — New Grass Revival, The SteelDrivers and Mountain Heart. A year or so before The SteelDrivers released their debut, Mountain Heart was already showcasing a young, full-throated singer named Josh Shilling during their live shows and on their live album. Since then, Shilling’s bluesy belting, keyboard playing and songwriting have transformed and energized the solidly bluegrass foundation laid by group founders Jim VanCleve (fiddle) and Barry Abernathy (banjo). Mountain Heart’s new EP That Just Happened has some bluegrass tracks, sure — one of those being a sharp rereading of the traditional murder ballad “Little Sadie.” But it opens with a Southern-rock party number that wouldn’t be out of place on country radio, and closes with a heated cover of The Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post.”
