Handley is known as a guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter who’s placed cuts with a diverse roster of artists, including Garth Brooks, John Mellencamp and Diana Ross. But Handley is also a spiritual explorer who’s devoted over 30 years to deciphering the I Ching, the ancient Chinese system of divination that involves, among other things, the throwing and reading of coins. Much of the scholarship devoted to the I Ching, or “Book of Changes” as it’s known in the West, is dense and convoluted, so Handley set about writing a user-friendly guide. The result is Street Corner Ching: The Ancient Chinese Oracle in Plain English, which clarifies the meaning and interpretation of the I Ching in layman’s terms. The impulse behind Street Corner Ching is existential. “The realization that this oracle actually does work,” Handley writes, “has produced, for some folks … the first real inkling that any kind of spiritual reality even exists.”
