Missy Higgins w/Butterfly Boucher

When: Sun., July 8, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $17-$20
Just think of all the pop and country acts in the world who show up in the studio and slap their middling vocals on readymade tracks, with others providing the songs, the sound, even the Auto-Tune. You can’t help but root for a performer who brings as much to the table — in both musical ability and personality — as Butterfly Boucher. Going on a decade ago, there was a lot of buzz here and elsewhere (see: David Bowie and Madonna) about this razor-sharp alt-rock girl who delivered bracing hooks and inventive, leaning-toward-danceable grooves and played every instrument herself. It wasn’t hype. Even when the major-label system failed Boucher, she hung onto her nervy pop instincts. She’s shared the wealth, touring as Sarah McLachlan’s bassist, launching the witty rock trio Elle Macho and co-writing with fellow Nashvillian Katie Herzig and fellow Australia native Missy Higgins, whose new album The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle she co-produced. Fittingly, Boucher’s also invested her talents in a third solo album; it’s self-recorded, self-released, self-titled and still ahead of the curve.
