Curious sounds have been brewing in the Windy City courtesy of a collision between art and popular music, and tonight we get a taste. Building on minimalist principles made popular by Steve Reich, Philip Glass and Brian Eno, Jaime Fennelly’s Mind Over Mirrors uses a variety of electronic devices to turn a limited number of sound sources into a singing, sighing orchestra. Matt Christensen, whose new LP Coma Gears is out this week via experimental label Bathetic Records, peers into the dark depths of dream-pop’s ethereal soul. Rebecca Schoenecker and Patrick Holbrook, aka Laughing Eye Weeping Eye, expand on folk traditions from the world over, making sounds that could have been sent into the future through some shaman’s incantations. Local avant-folk standard bearers The Cherry Blossoms round out the bill with their blend of gentle stomp and apocalyptic blues.
