Phil Madeira’s new full-length, Mercyland: Hymns for the Rest of Us, is religious music for secular people, and the longtime Nashville producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist put together a great cast for the project. With help from such esteemed figures as Emmylou Harris and John Scofield, Mercyland puts blues back into Christianity, or vice versa — take your pick. It’s a document that stands as a corrective to the bland religious mania of this very strange moment in American political history. Tonight’s show features some of the folks who played on the record — guests include the great guitarist, producer and songwriter Buddy Miller and the underrated singer and guitarist Shawn Mullins. Also on hand will be The North Mississippi All Stars, who specialize in fleet, stinging blues, and The Wood Brothers, who prefer a jazzy take on blues (as befits the presence of Medeski Martin & Wood co-founder Chris Wood). Madeira made a remarkable record — seeing it performed live should be mind-blowing.
