The paintings of Memphis artist Hamlett Dobbins are a highlight of Five From Memphis, The Arts Company exhibit that runs through July 19. Gallerygoers who’ve seen that show will find plenty to like at a new exhibition of Dobbins’ work at Belmont. Dobbins’ name hovers near the top of any best-of-Tennessee list of abstract painters, and while his imagery might not be immediately recognizable, the work in his solo exhibition The River Beneath Us directly reflects on personal experiences and interactions between the artist, his friends and family. This show also includes Dobbins’ collaborative paintings with Tad Lauritzen Wright from the pair’s Mellow Mountain Coalition series. Dobbins’ work will be showing in the Leu Art Gallery, while a display of the Tennessee Art Education Association’s Best of the Best Student Art Exhibition and Connections: TAEA Member Exhibition at Gallery 121 will make this opening event a campus-wide art crawl of a sort.
