Mel Tillis

His pronounced stutter may be the first trait people associate with Tillis, but his talents as a songwriter and bandleader ushered the charismatic Floridian into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. As a writer, his classics range from rocking fun (“Mental Revenge,” “I Ain’t Never”) to poignant character sketches (“Detroit City,” “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town”). At age 76, his secret weapons remain his comic timing and the tight interplay of his long-running band, The Statesiders. Tillis joins a strong Grand Ole Opry lineup featuring Martina McBride, JoDee Messina, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart and Rhonda Vincent.
