Megafaun w/Bad Axe

When: Sun., Nov. 20, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $12
Megafaun managed a neat trick on last year's full-length release Heretofore — their frankly experimental combination of post-Grateful Dead rock, all-American boogie and musique concrète was bracing. Brad and Phil Cook like to play stately and slightly stoned guitar and keyboard figures against a variety of settings provided by percussionist Joe Westerlund, and the North Carolina trio has their thorny side. Apart from their songs, which recall the somewhat more blues-influenced material created by such ’60s folk-rock pioneers as The Youngbloods and Kaleidoscope, they favor oddball soundscapes that sound like the band's been listening to Albert Ayler and Jimmy Martin — perhaps at the same time. Their new, self-titled full-length continues to explore avant-folk, with relaxed, wistful songs that Jerry Garcia would have appreciated, and they essay a few jazzy tunes that throw in some bluegrass for good measure. Sometimes dabblers have more fun.
