Mega Fun

Though Megafaun may best be known as the remnants of DeYarmond Edison (with whom Justin Vernon severed connections in order to break his creative mold as Bon Iver), this Durham, N.C., trio has quickly separated themselves from the typical farm-rock riffraff. Hardly a mere stepping-stone for artists on their way to a prosperous solo career, Megafaun's Appalachian folk and kitchen-sink accents recall a more organic Wooden Wands or Avett Brothers after a few too many jugs of moonshine. Roping in impromptu fireside sing-alongs as often as meticulously disheveled tape splices, this year's debut Bury the Square skirts the standard verse-chorus structure of Southern folk for a wandering six-track package. Even if The Rosebuds are headlining this particular gig and soaking up quite a bit of press, you certainly couldn't ask for a much better or more aptly chosen warm-up band.
