Material Glance: A Portfolio of Lithographs by Antoni Tapies and Poems by Shuzo Takiguchi

For centuries, visual artists and poets have collaborated in myriad innovative and thoughtful ways. In 1844, Baudelaire wrote his great poem “On Tasso in Prison,” which was inspired by painter Eugene Delacroix. In 1928, Charles Demuth painted “The Figure 5 in Gold” in response to a poem written by William Carlos Williams that begins with the lines “Among the rain / and lights / I saw the figure 5 / in gold.” This summer, Vanderbilt highlights another important collaboration between printmaker Antoni Tàpies, one of the most widely known postwar Spanish artists, and Japanese poet and critic Shuzo Takiguchi, whose writings were responsible for introducing surrealism to Japan in the 1920s. Material Glance features the 1975 collaborative portfolio of lithographs and poems that arose from their mutual love of surrealism. Takiguchi sent poems written in Japanese characters to Tàpies, who created book. The exhibition will include additional works by Tàpies, some which have never been shown before, from Vanderbilt’s permanent collection.
