Restaurant Details

This longtime Jefferson Street fixture is one of the most racially, socially and economically diverse dining establishments in the city. It’s also the only place in town to get a slab of ribs at 4 am or 4 pm. It’s take-out only, but many customers go no farther than their front seat before plowing into the superb short rib sandwich. The fish sandwich—filets rolled in corn meal, deep-fried and served on two slices of white bread with pickles, onion, mustard and hot sauce—is awesome.

Got a groupon for this place.... got bbq plate w/ beans and slaw... my beans had a hair them....right from the start. Slaw wasn't all that good either. It was hot in the dining room, and the tables felt greasy to the touch, and it smelled dirty in there too. Not mention this place is in the GHETTO !!

The newly remodeled facility, Large screen TV, Excellent Staff and Service was all so pleasant. But to TOP it off. I saw a young lady at work with a plate overlapping to the brim with delicious looking food that smelled fantastic. Everyone was OOOOO ing and AWWWW ing at work. My husband grew up in the surroundings and was very familiar after informing him of about the young lady's plate and Mary's BBQ. We visited last night. Oh my - there is not a word to describe their food. (i.e. One fish sandwich held 4 fish on 2 slices of bread with 1/2 plate of fries) (i.e. cobbler to die for) (i.e. Ribs, Turnip Greens & corncakes are perfectly seasoned) It is UMMMM UMMMM GOOD!!!!!!! Delicious!!!! Worth every penny. Monies worth........Not too expensive at all. They cook like Soulfood grandmothers and serve you UP!!! I commend this restaurant 100% I felt comfortable in the newly remodeled facility. Thank you for such a wonderful experience. AND we will be back as regular customers. Ant & ACE Ewing.

i was dying to try this spot, as i was just craving some real deal barbeque. so, i drove on down to this spot and made my order. i'll try and be brief.
i could write about 5 paragraphs, but let me just encapsulate, and save you some time: first off, it was way expensive for 'neighborhood barbecue'.
a half slab of ribs, a fried catfish sandwhich, and 3 very CHINCY dixie cup size sides (beans, potato salad, and corn bread), was $26.73...OUCH!!
before leaving, i looked in to the bag and went over my order with the lady, to make sure everything was in the bag, but somehow, when i got home, i realized she forgot to put the barbecue sauce in with the ribs. no sauce? OUCH!!
i actually had to go out again to Kroger and get some. no excuse for this oversight. OUCH!!
my girlfriend said that good ribs should be 'fall-off-the-bone tender', but these were far from it. i had the fried catfishfish sandwhich, which was fair, a portion more than i could eat...but without the pickles and hotsauce, it was like eating two pieces of cornmeal-dipped cardboard on wonder bread.
bottom line: WAY TOO MUCH MONEY FOR SUCH AN EXPERIENCE. for this price, you could share appetizers at J. Alexander's. Or stuff your faces at Las Palmas, and have money left over toward a movie...
forget it...
