It's hot as hell, the holiday weekend was hectic, and the kids down the block seem to have an endless supply of Black Cats and Roman Candles. Where are you going to go to get some relief? Our suggestion would be going to Richland Ballroom, the local house show venue — use your Internet skills to find out where it is — to cop a piece of their remarkably chill, surprisingly exciting vibe. It's about as low-key a show as you're likely to find, but the music of New Mexico-based experimental folkies Mariposa and Javelina are bound to set your mind swimming — which, with temps like these, is the next best thing to actually swimming. Both artists specialize in a desolate and beautiful vein of noise folk that can only come from the desert — majestic, awe-inspiring with just a hint of menace and isolation.
