Simon Bond of Antioch this week quietly removed the paper American flag he had taped to the back window of his 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sept. 12.
For several days after the Sept. 11 attacks, The Tennessean published a flag for readers to cut out and display, and Bond had immediately posted the banner in the center of the back glass. At the time, at least two of his neighbors waved and looked on approvingly.
But Tuesday night, after removing several bags of groceries from his vehicle, Bond carefully checked to be sure none of his neighbors were watching, then removed the tape that held the paper flag. Uncertain about the propriety of wadding up the paper with the flag printed on it, he carefully folded it before placing it at the bottom of his trash can.
“I mean, it was a piece of newsprint, and it was turning a little yellow,” Bond said defensively when contacted by the news media about his actions. “Besides, all these flags have got to come down sooner or later, and I realized mine was a safety hazard ’cause I couldn’t see very well out the back glass.
“I’m still a true American,” Bond said, as sweat beads formed on his upper lip. “I don’t need a flag on my car to prove that.”
One of Bond’s neighbors, Mary Beecham, doesn’t buy his reasoning. “I started out with one of those paper flags too,” she says. “But as soon as I could, I put a cloth flag on my car. I remember the day he put his flag on, he was all proud and waving to everybody. I think it’s very significant that he took it off under cover of darkness, like a thief in the night.
“My father and uncle were in World War II, and I don’t appreciate my neighbors acting in such an unpatriotic manner,” she adds. “I’m reporting him to the FBI."
