Off to a snappy start with a six-song EP (
The Tanglewood Sessions) that dropped late last month, Mama’s Blue Dress is an all-female quartet that’s unsurprisingly heavy on songwriting and harmonies, but unexpectedly solid on the instrumental front. Vanessa Olivarez sticks to percussion, while Nicole Witt and Elizabeth Elkins lean mostly on fiddle and guitar, leaving Bethany Dick-Olds as the most determined multi-instrumentalist. The result is an acoustic sound riddled with rhythmic variety. There’s a whole lot of harmony singing here on songs that blend literate yet hooky construction with a strong dose of sisterhood, and while the eponymous “Mama’s Blue Dress” may not be a wholly successful Southern gal rap (even though it appears to be based on a true story), “Blue Nation” is a convincing and entertaining piece of work — as is the rest of the project.
