Magdalene House Fundraiser

When: Wed., Nov. 3, 6 p.m. 2010
Price: free

Consider the thistle plant: Depending on the particular strain, it’s a nuisance on par with the common weed, or a breathtaking prize worthy of prominent placement in a high-class garden. Some variants are edible; others — despite their thorny exterior, were thought to possess powers great enough to cure the plague. So it’s fitting that the Magdalene House — a comprehensive rehab program for women upended by violence and addiction that fosters second chances — names its entrepreneurial program (which hand-makes and distributes natural bath and body products made from local lavender) after this complex, resilient plant. This annual fundraiser, “Love Stories of Hope, Surrender and Courage,” shares stories of those second chances with the community, and proof of the organization’s open-door compassion is evidenced by the fact that no pricey plate purchase is required for entry. The event is free, but RSVP is requested to marlei@thistlefarms.org.
