Madison Smartt Bell

When: Thu., Jan. 31, 7 p.m. 2013
Not the most predictable visitor to Nashville, Madison Smartt Bell has returned to his hometown in recent years to discuss Haitian painters, read from an acclaimed piece of writing (most recently, from the febrile 9/11-centered novel The Color of Night) and play a jam session in an art gallery. Sometimes, he’s done two or more of those things on the same night. A rangy intellect, Bell can hold serve in a variety of formats. As far as we know, he won’t be picking up a guitar this evening — the Vanderbilt website lists this as simply a “reading” — but even if he doesn’t, Bell is more than capable of captivating an audience through the sheer force of his prose.
