Madame Butterfly

When: Saturdays. Continues through Oct. 13 2012
Nashville Opera opens its 2012-13 season with this familiar Puccini masterwork. Artistic director John Hoomes helms the production, and William Boggs will conduct the Nashville Symphony. The cast features soprano Jee Hyun Lim, tenor Cody Austin and baritone Levi Hernandez. Opera-goers may want to revel in the classical familiarity of the Puccini, since they’ll be well-challenged by the second show of the season, David Lang’s The Difficulty of Crossing a Field (presented Nov. 9-11), a hybrid of opera and straight dramatic play. Based on a one-page story by Ambrose Bierce, Lang’s opus is set in Selma, Ala., in 1854, where a plantation owner walks across a field and vanishes into thin air, leaving his family, slaves and witnesses baffled. More conventional operatic fare follows in the new year with Rossini’s Cinderella (Jan, 25, 27, 29) and Mozart’s Magic Flute (April 11 and 13).
