According to research conducted by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, only 7 percent of directors, 13 percent of writers and 20 percent of film producers are female. The shocking gender imbalance in one of our country’s most visible art forms is exactly why we need film festivals like LUNAFEST. This national film festival, established 13 years ago by LUNA (yes, the energy bars), features nine short films by, for and about women, and will travel to more than 150 cities in 2014. In addition to serving as an introduction to a group of filmmakers you might not be familiar with — Angela Alford’s ode to septuagenarian basketball players Granny’s Got Game looks particularly promising — proceeds from the $25 admission fee benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and Her Point of View, an international organization that supports women in the arts.
