Better to be Lucky
Why, a man'd be a fool to have a last name like Tubb and not have a go at Nashville, right? Well, not exactly. The great-nephew of country-music legend Ernest Tubb—one imagines the young Tubb doesn't mind all articles about him beginning this way, as he could have just as easily called himself Lucky Pierre—Lucky fits solidly into the Hank III school of country, and not just because of good genetics. His music, more Wayne Hancock than Jimmy Wayne, is built on strafing Telecaster leads, a little fiddle, finely hewn numbers about hard livin'—Lucky once did a five-year prison stint for transporting a carload of the sticky-icky through Texas—all delivered in a voice that suggests Mike Ness with a Buck Owens fetish. Tubb's band The Modern Day Troubadours deserve mention too. For a young man this (relatively) new to the game to have such crack backing suggests there's more to Tubb than meets the eye—meaning, that last name. His great-uncle had some 80+ hits over the years. The likelihood of Tubb the Younger garnering even one would seem to be a stretch. The likelihood of you, hillbilly music fan, having fun at this show? High.
