Viva la English-Only!
You guys seem to print nothing but the upper-class opinions on this English-Only bill. How about one of the $18K-and-less-a-year group? I live in the neighborhood with these illegals.
Like it or not, many are lazy in respect to learning English. Many speak it, but they play dumb when it suits them. They just keep playing the old record: "Poor old illegals. They can't seem to learn, so please just change everything to suit them so they won't need to learn."
Turn off the Spanish channels, go out and learn! Churches all over town give free classes. Many have been here for several years and haven't learned yet. Get real.
Please don't get me wrong. I admire Mr. Ramos and the too-few others like him. If he were my neighbor, I know I could look out my kitchen window and not see him in broad daylight peeing in the front yard among the beer bottles. God help America.
Linda WheelerShut your pie-hole, Kelsey
I am from Carter County and I voted for Speaker Kent Williams. I cannot speak for Kent Williams, but if I had been in his position I would have told that little weaselly, rat-bastard Rep. Kelsey to shut his pie-hole. ("GOP Grandstander Calls on Kent Williams to Quit," Jan. 14, Pith in the Wind.)
Williams is a liar
What you all seem to be forgetting overall is that Rep. Williams lied verbally and when signing his pledge. I find it odd that whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, you would support someone like that. Anyone who does that to others will do it to you. It will come back to bite all of you in the ass.
He is the most underqualified representative for this job. There are many qualified Democrats and Republicans. Unfortunately, the Democrats have taken a low blow at the Tennessee citizen for [putting] our state in this man's hand. Who is selfish?
ECWe need Republicans
I wonder if Dumbya will be most reviled by Republicans ("George W: How He Stacks Up Against the Worst Presidents," Jan. 20, Pith in the Wind). Until 2000 or so, The GOP was the party of Ronald Reagan. Now, the Grand Old Party is the party of G.W. Bush and will be for years. Whether he was the cause or not, the U.S. is in the poorest shape in living memory. The point was well made that the highly vaunted GOP party discipline may have been too much for its own good. (Note to GOP: think Nazis, Bolsheviks, Thatcher.)
Where can the GOP go from here? It's hard to tell. I am a card-carrying liberal and proud of it, but without the Republicans as a counterpoise, the Democrats will make mistakes.
Arby StrumthwacketAbsolute human trash
Not only was George W. Bush the worst president in our country's history, he was also a piece of absolute human trash. His ego and insecurities have lead the way to over 4,000 armed forces deaths, possibly hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi deaths, and a country in the midst of economic collapse.
Unlike some, I don't look at this man and see a really nice guy. What I see is a spoiled, arrogant, indifferent troll who can put on a pleasant facade to most, then turn around and stab them when they're not looking. Stubborness is not strength. Ignorance is not strength. Misdirected anger is not strength. This subhuman garbage doesn't deserve anyone's good graces.
HansenWhy Jesse Register?
I really can't understand how the intelligent people in Nashville allowed him in the city, much less to run the school system ("Jesse Register Meets the Press," Jan. 8, Pith in the Wind). When he was in Hamilton County (Chattanooga), he damn near bankrupted it after our intelligent people chose him. He came from a school system in North Carolina, which he did bankrupt. Someone needs to put a very short leash on him.
Crystal Gazer
It was hard to find much to disagree with concerning the results of The Ninth Annual Nashville Scene Country Music Critics Poll. Geoffrey Himes wrote an excellent article about the poll on Jan. 15, "Beginner's Luck," and the 2008 Country Music Critics Poll voters sure know what they are talking about. Their comments were a plus as well.
This being said, you're going to get country music fans out there like myself who agree with just about all the poll results but just wish there was one other country music star that was mentioned. Just one more.
For me, under New Acts or Female Vocalists, it would have to be Crystal Shawanda. Her powerful debut single "You Can Let Go" made it to the Top 20 nationwide. She has a voice that is very well balanced and strong. All of her songs on her CD Dawn of a New Day have a way of getting under your skin and into your heart. She holds her own and rocks the house with songs like "My Roots Are Showing" and "Try." On other songs, like "What Do I Have to Do" and "Tender Side," her soft and sultry style brings you to your knees.
I think Crystal Shawanda has just scratched the surface here, and she will be around for the long haul. Watch for her to make a splash in the Tenth Annual Nashville Scene Country Music Critics Poll.
