No place like home—so go there
This is the U.S.A. When people come here to live they need to expect to learn the ways and the language ("English Only foes hope to lull Eric Crafton to sleep, then deliver a knockout punch," Dec. 18). As a nation we have bent over backwards long enough to accommodate everyone else. Let them make an effort to learn the ways of their "new" homeland.
If I chose to live in another country I wouldn't expect them to cater to my every whim. I'd either learn the language or go back "home," or better yet, I'd stay "home" to start with.Kathy
Fighting English Only: It's not just for idealists
I think this story mischaracterizes the opposition to the English Only amendment ("English Only foes hope to lull Eric Crafton to sleep, then deliver a knockout punch," Dec. 18). Rather than being driven primarily by (God love 'em) the Nashville Peace and Justice Coalition, the powerful push against the backwards bill is coming from some very square places, including the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, which is only mentioned in an offhand way at the bottom of the piece.
Mayor Dean, who is a Democrat but has never to the best of my knowledge had dreadlocks and hasn't recently sported a braid or unkempt beard, is also in strong opposition.
The fact is, lots of very mainstream people think the bill will cost the city money, damn the human rights. I think being an open culture is a good idea, but that won't be the force behind a possible defeat of the misguided amendment.Ray
To MMA promoters: Shut up
Hold on a second, it is pathetic what is going on here ("A night at the mixed martial arts fights in Nashville," Dec. 18). Hopefully everyone looking into the MMA community wants to see it succeed in Nashville. This is not the way to do it. I know it is more the promoters, but promoters are what will KILL the sport in Nashville. Arguing and complaining over who has the better fight cards, venues or whatever is not the way to "seriously" promote the sport. ALL of these promoters need to come together and work to get the best fight cards, venues, etc. I think it is pathetic when other promoters bash another, as this article does. It is just unethical to call out by name the venue that supposedly wasn't good. Not to mention that I was at the Wildhorse fight and I KNOW that there were some good fights. Yes, some were mismatched fights, but for the FIRST EVER fight in Nashville (not to mention, Nashville MMA and gameness fight gear were NOT involved in) there were definitely highlights at this event! So I would like to say to all promoters, stop trying to simply make money and look at the sport of MMA as a whole. The money will come if the sport doesn't die from antics like this!! Go hard, or go home.
I would like to know who exactly writes The Spin every week. You talk of bands and musicians lacking "balls" or "identity," but never publish yours. I want to know what bands they are in. I want to hear the music they make.
This whole Pitchfork/Buddyhead negative review thing is bad for you as a person/"writer," bad for what's left of music, bad for this town and bad for humanity. Stop putting down others because you can't fucking do anything for yourself (besides three paragraphs in a shitty free weekly newspaper). Go do something productive and stop looking at yourself in the mirror.
For instance, "was especially old and vaguely resembled Edgar Winter" (The Spin, May 8)—these were the words you used to describe Craig Krampf. You are patronizing someone who has done a lot for the Nashville music community and for the history of rock 'n' roll over the past 40 years. Go to All Music Guide...look into it. At the very least, show some respect. Do your homework. Maybe people who actually matter in this world will laugh with you and not at you.Nick Torres
