Love-Hate Mail

Spun out
Dearest Spin Doctor: First of all, allow me to thank you for coming out to 12th & Porter Friday night for the little rock 'n' roll show Caitlin, Glossary and ourselves put on (The Spin, Dec. 11). (Yes, we booked it, and Miss Rose and Glossary respect us enough to share a stage with us.) Furthermore, thank you so much for taking the time to write a blurb about us in The Spin.

It's been five long years of playing bartender, sound guy, but otherwise empty room shows to get to the point where the almighty Nashville Scene would pay attention to our little rag-tag rock 'n' roll band, though we have had Critics' Picks this year in this very publication that called our music both "rugged" and "timeless."

This has been a busy and tough year for us. We recorded a record on our own in the dead of winter in a freezing and uninsulated garage. We had to use space heaters to keep our hands warm enough to record guitar parts. We've booked ourselves and played over 60 shows in any dive from Kansas to the Florida panhandle that would have us, all while working full time. We haven't had anything handed to us. We've had to work for every fan we have.

So basically, I think it is pretty easy to say somebody doesn't have balls—when you don't even put your name on what you say. Nothing personal, but for the record, my name is Wess Floyd. I'm from south Alabama. I play in a rock 'n' roll band. I love music. That's who I am. Who are you?

If you'd stayed for more than four songs, you would have heard me blow my voice out. (I had a sinus infection last week.) You would have seen our bass player—his name is Nathan Roland—bleed all over his bass. (He sliced his finger open at work and refused stitches so he could actually play the show.) I will respectfully disagree with the G-Blossoms, Ezra and Hootie comparisons. I really don't think you meant it; you were just trying to be mean. When have words like "stompin', struttin', monitor-foot-proppin', rock grimacin', amp climbin' " ever been used to describe those bands? I have heard them used to describe folks such as Springsteen, The Stones, The Who, The Stooges, The Ramones, AC/DC, the Replacements, MC5, The Clash and the Sex Pistols. Not that we are in that league, but did they lack balls?

You did seem to like two-thirds of the show. If it will make you feel better, I will refund the $1.67 "Wess Floyd & the Daisycutters" portion of your $5 cover. Then you can listen to the Animal Collective in your Prius (with your Apple sticker on the back) on the way to Bongo East, where you can have a triple soy latte on us (a Bud-heavy-drinking, cheese-burger-eating, American rock 'n' roll band) to go with your tofu sandwich.

Grieving Magpie
While I'm thrilled to see Robert Campbell and Nashville Fashion Group profiled in your recent cover story ("A handful of designers are igniting Nashville's underground fashion scene," Dec. 11), I was disappointed to see that Magpie Apparel was not covered more thoroughly. Rhiannon Guillet's line surely deserved more than a quick a mention!

Regardless, thanks for the coverage on behalf of Nashville's fashion and accessory designers.

Glorified seamstresses
I sell my stuff at Local Honey and I'm disgusted ("A handful of designers are igniting Nashville's underground fashion scene," Dec. 11). The writer of this was very rude and unprofessional when she interviewed me. None of the people at Local Honey should even consider themselves "designers," especially if they're self-taught seamstresses.

I think that almost every music writer at the scene is a "hater." Especially Tracy Moore. Unless you are the writers personal favorite band you will most likely get a bad review, which really sucks being that some bands are trying to make it in this town. If you are not the writer im speaking of dont be offended. All of my friends are in bands. Mostly good bands and every one of them has had a bad review in the scene. From the "Perpetually always on the brink of breaking Luna Halo" to "the gin blossoms, hootie, and better than ezra sounding Wes floyd." Close friends, great bands, Ass Hole news paper= Nashville.
