The NFL ain't nothing compared to landscape architecture

The NFL ain't nothing compared to landscape architecture

Beverly Keel's article on Eddie George ("The Longest Yard," March 17) was thorough and very enjoyable. Most of us have heard the story of how his farsighted mother got Eddie to a place where he would learn discipline, and thus shaped his life for success; it's a great story, and his mother deserves great credit. But it would seem that Ms. Keel might have gone further into what promises to be an exciting and fulfilling post-football career for Eddie George as a landscape architect.

Those of us in the field have great jobs, doing satisfying work in the creation of environments for human use. Let's see now: 31 years old, worth $12 million to $15 million, already has one office in Ohio and looking to develop one here.... I'd say Eddie, with his intense competitive spirit and unflagging discipline, will be one heckuva competitor, and doubtless will be great for the profession.

Go, Eddie; now you get to start your real life's work, and we'll be cheering!

You're welcome

Thanks to Maria Browning for her wonderful review of my book Just for Fun: The History of AAU Women's Basketball ("Hosiery Girls and Bomberettes," March 17). Of course, I was jealous at not having a whole page or being at the top of this one. But your reading of the book was very perceptive.

Two words leaped out at me—"thoroughness" and "empathy." I did work hard to get the facts and attribute them. I hope they don't make reading the book tedious for some. My empathy for these women is genuine. I liked them; they were important; their history deserved recording. Again, thank you.

To quote Hamlet's mother...

Me thinks the Scene doth protest too much. Your editorial about Kay West's appointment to the Farmers Market Board ("Halloween II," March 10) begged two questions from this avid reader (less avid now with tweens in the house):

1. Don't we want Kay West to cover the Farmers Market Board? The Farmers Market has been going through some changes and will continue to do so. The Scene does a good job covering stories that the dailies do not. The absence of Kay's reporting would be a great loss.

2. Was the last line of the editorial really necessary?

We hear ya, and it's coming back soon

Regarding Desperately Seeking the News: whatever happened to this valuable check and balance on our local journalism community? I found it invaluable as something to keep The Tennessean and the TV stations on their toes, but it seems to have disappeared. It's the one true public service Nashville Scene provided, and I hope it's only on a brief hiatus.

Correction

The NFL's minimum salary for Eddie George would be $655,000, not $750,000, as was stated in last week's cover story.
