eing a music critic is typically a pretty uneventful gig: You wake up, listen to some records, slap together some adjectives and then you go back to bed. It’s not an action-heavy gig by any means, but occasionally you end up on an assignment that turns into downright jaw-dropping adventure. In this case, I got to ride in a cab with Steve Berlin from Los Lobos. Los Lobos, legends amongst roots-rockers and punk rockers alike, was one of my very first musical obsessions, thanks to the La Bamba soundtrack. (Don’t laugh — I discovered the Beach Boys via the Cocktail soundtrack, which is far more embarrassing.) They’ve been in heavy rotation ever since, so just being in a cab as Berlin talked casually about his life in music was just about as epic as you can get. With a catalog that is second to none and a history that stretches back almost 40 years, you can expect this show to be just as momentous.
