There ought to be a caravan of six-string enthusiasts headed down I-24 Friday night to check out the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet at Sewanee. The Grammy-winning classical guitar ensemble is well into its third decade of concerts, with an innovative repertoire ranging from arrangements of concert hall standbys by Rossini and Bizet to a recent recording of Brazilian music featuring vocalist Luciana Souza. Popular recitalists from Carnegie Hall to Beijing, the four sport impressive legit credentials but also proudly embrace influences from Michael Hedges to Frank Zappa. They collaborated recently with actor John Cleese on a presentation of Words and Music from the Time of Cervantes, so you may expect to hear some 16th- and 17th-century Spanish music arranged by quartet member Bill Kanengiser. Whatever's on the program, though, this fun and polished group is well worth the drive to Monteagle. Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $10 for students.
