Providence, R.I., has long held a distinction as host to a hyperactive and noisy music scene born out of warehouses and basements. No surprise, a lot of that noise ventures into metal. For that reason, much of Rhode Island metal also tends to be of the weirdo variety (The Body, White Mice and Suffering Bastard come to mind). That’s the scene that spawned Loon. But rather than get caught up in their own idiosyncrasies, Loon devote their attention to The Riff. The co-ed trio specializes in mid-tempo and monolithic heaviness, but the riffs are slithery and the vocals dynamic, ranging from almost pretty to demonic shrieking. It’s less about pushing envelopes and more about what always works. Local denim-jacket punks Symptoms open.
