Long Story Bit by Bit: Liberia Retold, Photography by Tim Hetherington

When: Oct. 12-Dec. 6 2012
Umbrage Editions publishes high-quality visual books and organizes traveling exhibitions that often premiere in the publisher’s own Brooklyn gallery. Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery’s new Umbrage show explores themes of war, survival and endurance similar to those in the gallery’s 2010 exhibit of Tyler Hicks’ work, Histories are Mirrors: The Path of Conflict Through Afghanistan and Iraq. Tim Hetherington’s Long Story Bit By Bit: Liberia Retold is filled with a cast of characters that include political operators and traditional bush hunters, warlords and the woman who is remaking the nation as Africa’s first female president. If Hetherington’s name sounds familiar, it may be because he co-directed Restrepo, the award-winning documentary about the war in Afghanistan. Tragically, Hetherington was killed in 2011 while covering the siege of Misrata in Libya.
