Live Jazz

Nashvillians Don Aliquo (saxophone) and Tom Giampietro (drums) teamed up with Memphis pianist Michael Jefry Stevens and Oxford, Miss., bassist Jonathan Wires to form this collective, sort of a Southern Jazz All-Stars. With a combined résumé that includes work with Gary Burton, Rufus Reid, Dave Liebman, Jeff Coffin, Victor Wooten and Rod McGaha, these guys aren’t messing around, and their stylistic breadth serves them well, from the soul-stirring free-form mayhem of Aliquo’s “Chant I” and “Chant II” to the bittersweet melody of Giampietro’s “A Long and Lonely Night’s Work” to the mournful blues of Stevens “Spiritual.”
