Is Nashville getting safer? The good news from Metro Police is that for the first seven months of 1999, overall crime was down 19.7% as compared with the first seven months of 1998.

Robbery: -14.1%

Burglary: -20.5%

Larceny: -20.6%

Auto Theft: -31.8%

Criminal Homicide: -40.6%

Rape: -1.4%

Aggravated Assault: -2.3%

But compare the month of July with the same month a year ago. Overall crime decreased 15%. But whether Nashville is getting any safer depends on how you define safe:

Robbery: -26.6%

Burglary: -3.7%

Larceny: -19.7%

Auto Theft: -26.4%

Criminal Homicide: +9.1%

Rape: +11.1%

Aggravated Assault: +9.9%
