Each year when things start to get revved up for the Fourth of July, I’m reminded of a scene from
Dazed and Confused in which a teacher (played by smokin’-hot Kim Krizan) tells the whole class, “OK, guys, one more thing. This summer when you’re being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth of July brouhaha, don’t forget what you’re celebrating, and that’s the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn’t want to pay their taxes.” And then I can’t help but think, fuck it, I love a brouhaha of any kind, fireworks rule and celebrating just about anything to do with the American flag is celebrating white males who don’t want to pay their taxes. Beyond things that go boom and a mêlée of red-white-and-blue glitter, Nashville’s Fourth of July celebration will be packed with patriotic tunes, food and prizes. A concert with The Mavericks, Craig Morgan, Sarah Darling and the Music City Hit-Makers will kick off at 6:45 p.m., and the Nashville Symphony will bring it home with an arrangement to accompany the fireworks spectacle. Damn the man, enjoy the fireworks!
